Hot Air Balloon Marrakech (2026): Prices, Safety, Tips
Key Takeaways
A sunrise balloon flight in Marrakech lasts 45 to 60 minutes inside a 4 to 5 hour package from about 130 EUR. Licence suspensions in 2025 make the operator the real decision.
A hot air balloon flight in Marrakech is a sunrise trip. You are picked up early, spend 45 to 60 minutes in the air over the Palmeraie and the desert plains with the Atlas on the horizon, then eat a Berber breakfast on the ground. Plan 4 to 5 hours door to door, with listing prices from about 130 EUR. The choice that matters is the operator, not the price, and 2025 showed why.
How a Marrakech balloon flight works
Every package we reviewed follows the same sequence, whatever the operator.
- Pickup: early morning from your hotel or riad. The shared flight on Headout offers a sunrise or a late-morning departure, and the private option is a sunrise flight.
- Launch site: tea, coffee and pastries while the crew prepares the balloon. The shared listing mentions a light snack before the flight.
- In the air: 45 to 60 minutes on the private flight. Operators describe views over the Palmeraie, desert plains, Berber villages and the Atlas Mountains.
- Landing: a traditional Berber breakfast served in a tent, plus a flight certificate.
- Back in town: Headout lists the whole package at about 4 hours for the shared flight and 4.5 hours for the private one, though its summary line rounds both to 5 hours.
The flight is the short part of the morning. Most of the time goes on transfers and breakfast, so book it early in your trip, not the day before your flight home.
What a balloon ride costs
Prices change with the operator, the season and the format, and booking sites quote different currencies. These are the figures on the pages we read.
| Format | Price shown | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Shared sunrise flight with transfers, breakfast and certificate | From 130 EUR | Headout listing |
| Private balloon compartment at sunrise | 160 EUR (list price 200 EUR) | Headout listing |
Hespress reported in May 2025 that balloon rides near Marrakech cost up to 180 EUR per person. Check what the price includes: transfers, breakfast, the certificate, and whether photos are extra. Both Headout listings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, and the shared one offers a new date or a full refund if the weather cancels the flight.
If a quote for a sunrise flight with transfers sits far below 130 EUR, ask what has been removed.
What changed in 2025: licences, altitude and wind
This is the section most booking pages leave out.
- March 2025: in a working paper presented by Morocco to the 42nd ICAO Assembly, the authorities state that sudden gusts of wind caused multiple emergency landings in Marrakech, with injuries to pilots and passengers (ICAO working paper).
- 13 May 2025: the Ministry of Transport and Logistics suspended the licences of three balloon companies near Marrakech after a commercial pilot reported balloons flying dangerously high on the approach to Menara Airport. Preliminary findings pointed to operators flying more balloons than they were licensed for, and to flights above permitted altitudes (Hespress).
- 26 May 2025: of twelve companies in the region, one had its licence revoked and was referred to prosecutors, one was permanently suspended, and others received suspensions of two to six months (Hespress).
- 10 October 2025: operators were waiting for a meeting with the ministry about a revised set of operating requirements (Hespress).
We found no published rule change from the ministry or the civil aviation authority after October 2025, as of 24 October 2026. Look for newer news before you book.
None of this is a reason to skip the flight. It means the licence is part of what you are buying.
Five checks before you pay
- Is the company licensed to carry passengers, and is the pilot licensed? A licensing decision reported by Hespress in March 2025 required companies to carry insurance or a financial guarantee covering passengers and people on the ground, and required balloon pilots to hold a professional balloon pilot licence (Hespress, in Arabic). Ask to see the operating licence, the insurance and the pilot's licence. Several operator websites also mention an Air Operator Certificate from the civil aviation authority.
- What wind limit do they fly to? Operator websites cite a surface wind limit of about 15 km/h. A company that claims it always flies is a warning sign.
- What happens if the flight is cancelled? Get a new date or a full refund in writing.
- What are the weight and mobility limits? The private listing sets a maximum of 100 kg per passenger and says the activity is not wheelchair accessible. Ask your operator for its own rules.
- How many passengers share a basket? Listings rarely say. The shared flight is described as a small group with no stated maximum, so ask.
Skip any operator that dodges the first two questions. The cheapest listing is not the one to take chances with.
What to wear and bring
- Closed shoes. The shared listing asks for closed-toe shoes, and the private listing bans sandals and flip-flops.
- Photo ID. The shared listing asks for a passport or valid ID, and the private one says ID may be requested at pickup.
- Layers. You will stand in open country at dawn, so dress for cold outside the height of summer.
- A sober start. The private listing excludes alcohol, drugs, pets and smoking, and says children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Balloon, quad, camel or desert dinner: pick one for your slot
| Activity | Time on the activity | Typical total | Price range on listings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot air balloon | 45 to 60 minutes in the air | 4 to 5 hours | From 130 EUR |
| Quad biking in the Palmeraie | About 2 hours | 2 to 3 hours | About 20 to 40 USD |
| Camel ride | About 1 hour | 2 to 3 hours (Palmeraie) | About 19 to 42 USD |
| Agafay desert sunset dinner | Evening | 3 to 7 hours | About 14 to 62 USD |
Our take: with one early morning free, the balloon gives the biggest view. With only an evening, the Agafay sunset dinner usually costs far less on listings and needs no 5 am start.
Turn the morning into a full day
You land mid-morning with the whole day ahead. A hammam suits that mood. Les Bains de Marrakech in the Medina is rated 4.8 from 5,515 Google reviews and opens 9 am to 8 pm. Heritage Spa is rated 4.7 from 844 reviews and opens 10 am to 8 pm.
At sunset, Kabana is a Medina rooftop rated 4.4 from 5,228 reviews, open from 11 am. For dinner with a show, Restaurant Leopard in Hivernage is rated 4.8 from 4,888 reviews and serves until 2 am. It is an official go-out.ma partner. For more ideas, see things to do in Marrakech and the best rooftop bars in Marrakech.
The short version
Book the flight early in your stay so a weather cancellation can be moved. Choose the operator on its licence and its refund terms, not on the lowest price. Then spend the afternoon in a hammam and the evening on a rooftop, and reserve your table from the venue pages above.
