Agafay Desert Day Trip from Marrakech: Sunset, Dinner, Prices
Key Takeaways
Agafay is a stone desert about 30 km from Marrakech, ideal for a sunset camel ride and desert dinner. Prices run from about 14 USD to over 60 USD depending on the camp.
The Agafay desert is a stone desert about 30 km from Marrakech, around 40 to 45 minutes by car, and it is the easiest way to get a desert sunset in a single evening. Most trips follow the same plan: late-afternoon pickup, a camel ride, sunset, dinner at a camp and a return after dark. Expect 3 to 7 hours depending on the package, and listing prices from about 14 USD to over 60 USD. Here is how to pick.
What Agafay is, and what it is not
Agafay is rocky, flat and open, not a field of sand dunes. A Marrakech travel guide calls it "the stone desert" rather than the Sahara, and a magazine listing places it at the foothills of the Atlas. That matters for expectations. You get big horizons, a sunset over stone and a sky full of stars, but you do not get Sahara dunes. Those are around Merzouga, a multi-day trip that does not fit into a day tour.
How a typical evening runs
- Pickup: late afternoon from your hotel or riad. An easyJet Holidays listing for a private ride says pickup happens about two hours before sunset, so the time shifts with the season.
- Drive: about 40 to 45 minutes on paved road.
- Camel ride: about 1 hour, often optional on dinner packages.
- Sunset and dinner: a meal at a desert camp, commonly harira, salad, then a beef or chicken tagine or couscous, often with live Berber music.
- Stars and return: stargazing after dinner, then the drive back well after dark.
Group tours total about 5 hours. Listings range from 3 to 7 hours depending on what they add.
What it costs
These are the ranges on the listings we read, mostly resale sites such as Expedia and Travelocity. Currencies and inclusions differ.
| Package | Price range shown | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Sunset and dinner, camel optional | About 14 to 22 USD | Is transport included, and is the camel extra |
| Mid-range dinner with transfers | About 25 to 39 USD | Which camp, and are drinks included |
| Dinner plus quad and camel | About 30 to 53 USD | Length of each activity |
| Group tour with camel, dinner and show | About 60 EUR | Group size and return time |
| Luxury camp package | About 62 USD on one listing | What the camp offers |
| Private sunset camel ride | From 30 GBP | Food and tips are not included |
The group-tour price comes from Lorenzigo's camel guide. The private ride is the easyJet Holidays listing, which includes mint tea in a tent, a private guide, air-conditioned transport and hotel pickup, with food and tips excluded. Prices change by date and season, so confirm before you pay.
How to choose an Agafay trip
- Ask which camp. A trip that cannot name the camp is a trip you cannot check. Look up its reviews first.
- Ask the group size. A private ride and a coach tour are very different evenings.
- Ask what dinner includes. Drinks are the usual surprise on the bill.
- Ask the return time. Sunset in winter is early, in summer it is late, and that decides when you are back.
- Ask for cancellation terms. Many listings allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Our advice: the very cheapest packages are fine for a sunset and a meal, but pay a little more for a named camp with a clear group size if the evening matters to you.
Camps worth knowing
Scarabeo Camp is one named camp you can check before you book. Its official site presents two camps, The Stone Camp and Les Roches Noires, set in the stone landscape against the Atlas. A travel magazine listing puts its double tents at about 225 USD a night and says guests can arrange activities such as balloon flights, trekking and horse riding. Check the official site for current rates. Staying overnight turns the trip from an evening into a night, and you wake up in the desert.
When to go and what to wear
October to April is the comfortable season, and July and August are intense. Agafay gets cold after sunset, so bring a jacket even in the shoulder months. Wear closed shoes you can walk on stones in, and pack a scarf for dust. Our guides to the best time to visit Marrakech and what to wear in Marrakech cover seasons and clothing.
If your trip does not include pickup, our guide to getting around Marrakech explains taxis and transfers.
Agafay, Palmeraie or Sahara: which desert experience
Three different places get sold as "the desert" near Marrakech. Lorenzigo's guide, an affiliate-driven blog based on the author's own trips, gives this comparison:
| Palmeraie | Agafay | Sahara (Merzouga) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distance | A palm grove about 20 minutes from a central riad | About 30 km, around 45 minutes by car | A 2 to 3 day trip, not a day tour |
| Landscape | Palms and sandy trails | Rocky stone desert | Sand dunes near Erg Chebbi |
| Typical price | From about 19 USD for a camel package | About 14 USD to over 60 USD | Shared-tent packages from about 140 to 150 EUR, luxury camps 200 to 220 EUR |
Our reading: Agafay is the best use of a single evening, because it is the only one of the three that fits into 3 to 7 hours and still feels like open desert. The Sahara is a different trip, with a different budget and several days.
A group dinner tour costs about 60 EUR per person on the guide above. An overnight in a double tent starts at about 225 USD for the tent on the magazine listing we found, which is why most visitors do the evening and go home. Sleep there if you want the night sky and a quiet morning, and take the evening tour if you only want the sunset.
Agafay fits an evening. For a morning, add a hot air balloon flight. For the same afternoon, a quad ride in the Palmeraie or a camel ride are the closest options. For a second day, read our list of things to do in Marrakech.
Back in the city after dark
You return late, and Marrakech is still open. Comptoir Darna in Hivernage is a dinner-show restaurant rated 4.7 from 13,729 Google reviews, open 7 pm to 1 am. Restaurant Leopard in Hivernage is rated 4.8 from 4,888 reviews and serves until 2 am. It is an official go-out.ma partner. For the club that opens at 11:30 pm, Theatro is rated 4.4 from 3,927 reviews.
The next morning, a hammam works off the road: Les Bains de Marrakech is rated 4.8 from 5,515 reviews and opens at 9 am.
The short version
Agafay is the best single-evening desert option from Marrakech. Pick a named camp, a clear group size and a return time you can live with, bring a jacket, and book dinner in the city for another night from the venue pages above.
